What makes us so special?

Chiropractic has come a long way since David D. Palmer gave the first chiropractic adjustment in on September 18, 1895.  Today there are many methods used by chiropractors to adjust spinal misalignments, joint dysfunctions, and subluxation complexes.  Most of these methods bear the name of the person most influential with their development.  Interestingly enough, one of the most advanced and scientific methods is called :

The Gonstead System

Gonstead procedures are the result of extensive clinical research by Clarence S. Gonstead, founder of the world famous Gonstead Clinic in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin and his associates. Doctor Gonstead practiced for fifty-five years and gave over four million chiropractic adjustments allowing him to develop the most complete method of biomechanical analysis available for use by today's doctors of chiropractic. It has been called the gold standard of chiropractic, and became the backbone of the national licensing board exams.  So why don't all chiropractors use this technique? Because the analysis takes longer and mastering the art of delivering a specific adjustment takes many hours of practice and committment.  Dr. Cocks is proud to bring this specific method of chiropractic care to the White Marsh area.

 The "Gonstead Chiropractor"

The Gonstead Chiropractor goes beyond what many chiropractors consider a spinal assessment by conducting a thorough analysis of your spine using five criteria to detect the presence of the vertebral subluxation complex.

Visualization - Visualization is a way to cross reference all other findings. Dr. Cocks is an expert in looking for subtle changes in your posture and movement which could indicate any problems.

Instrumentation - The instrument used in the Gonstead System is the Nervoscope. The Nervoscope detects differences of heat along the spine which can indicate inflammation and nerve pressure. This instrument is guided down the your back starting at the base of the neck, and then up your neck starting at the top of your back.  It feels like two fingers gliding down each side of your spine.

Static Palpation - This is simply the process of feeling (or palpating) your spine while seated and remaining still (static).  Dr. Cocks will feel for any swelling (or edema), tenderness and any abnormal skin texture or tension in the muscles and other tissues of your back.

Motion Palpation - This process involves feeling(or palpating) the spine while moving and bending it in different ranges of motion. This enables the chiropractor to determine any movement restrictions in each segment of your spine.

X-Ray Analysis - To see is to know, not to see is to guess.  X-ray films enable your doctor to see the entire structure of your spine. This helps in evaluating posture, joint and disc condition (disc thinning, bone spurs, etc), vertebral misalignments and ruling out any pathologies, or recent fractures that may be present or contributing to the your condition. These full-spine radiographs are taken in the standing and weight-bearing position to fully substantiate the exam findings. Spinal conditions are weight-bearing conditions, therefore non-weight-bearing radiographs do not offer the best information to evaluate your condition.

What makes them differentorthotic.jpg

Our Stabilizers are shoe inserts that support all three arches in your feet thereby creating a stable foundation upon which to build proper body posture. Each is custom-made to stabilize your spine and pelvis by correcting the specific imbalances in your feet.

Corrective Exercises

We teach our patients special "blueprint" exercises designed just for them to help strengthen and correct their own unique problem. These exercises can be performed in the comfort of your own home and can improve the effectiveness of your spinal correction by as much as 30-40%. In addition to skeletal misalignment, muscles and connective tissues can be out of place or strained by improper alignment and use. Specific exercises and stretches can help your body stay in balance and in health.

Lifestyle Advice

We often find it helpful to "coach" our patients on certain activities they should avoid or do differently to avoid aggravating their particular health challenge. Our goal is to help every patient achieve a fulfilling and happy lifestyle full of the activities they enjoy most. We recognize that each our patient is a whole person, and help them reach true health and wellness is a collaborate effort between our professionals and our patients.
